BMW M3
BMW M CARS are enhanced versions of their standard models with more power and improved handling characteristics. The M brand has been applied to the 3, 5 and 6 series cars. BMW has produced M versions of SUVs in recent years, much to the chagrin of many enthusiasts.
The M3 is the original M car and is considered the most popular. It’s is a very well balanced car and tons of fun for the street or the track. The first generation M3 was produced in 1986 in the E30 body style. It was raced extensively in the German touring car series (DTM). The E30 M3 is revered by enthusiasts worldwide. Some claim it’s the best M3, but it’s pretty well universally appreciated.
The second generation is the E36 M3. This version was modernized and horsepower was added. A little weight was added but the car is still considered to be very well balanced. Some enthusiasts comment that BMW “really got it right” with the E36 M3. Others complain about lower quality in materials.
The E46 is the third generation M3, with even more power and additional weight. Although faster than the E36 M3, some owners complain of understeer at the track. Many consider the styling to be better than the E36, and I’m inclined to agree.
The most recent M3 is the E92. It follows the progression of more power but more weight. A racing version of the E93 M3 is being run by Rahal-Letterman Racing in the ALMS.
